GI stands for Glycemic Index. It is a term you may have heard thrown around a lot lately, but what does it really mean, and what does eating Low GI foods have to do with weight loss? To understand the importance of eating Low GI foods to weight loss, and overall health, it is important to understand what exactly constitutes a Low GI food.

Low GI Foods:

Foods are rated on a scale of 1 to 100 according to their effect on the blood-glucose level two hours after the food is eaten. Foods classified as simple carbohydrates (sugar) will push the blood-glucose level up higher, faster than more complex carbohydrates, such as fruits and vegetables which provide a slow, steady rise in blood-glucose, without the inevitable crash that occurs with the simple sugars. These steady glucose levels are important for maintaining energy and reducing your risk to many diseases connected to these blood sugar imbalances.

Importance for Weight Loss:

When blood-glucose levels drop dramatically, the body will experience feelings of hunger. This can result in over-eating. However, when the blood-sugar levels remain constant, the body feels full.
