The obesity epidemic in the United States is startling. Below is a list of important facts, figures, and statistics that show just how alarming this disease is.
--In 2004, sugared drinks alone added 66 more calories per day to each American’s diet than they did in 1977.
--130 million Americans are either overweight or obese. This accounts for 64% of the population.
--More than 18 million people in the United States are diabetic, and 90% of these are type 2 diabetics (a disease strongly linked with being overweight or obese.) For every one-pound increase in weight, you have a 3-4% increase in chances of becoming diabetic. Losing ten pounds and exercising moderately drops your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 60%.
--American adults are currently averaging a weight gain of one pound per year per person. Just ten additional, unexpended calories per day result in an extra pound of weight put on per year.
--Childhood obesity has tripled since the 1970s. 1 in 6 American children and adolescents are either overweight or obese.
--Research has shown that our brains are as vulnerable to food addiction as they are to drug addiction, and that the combination of imagination and memory of a past experience with food creates an obsession for it.
