I love keeping fit and I travel to the gym five times per week. I have never been in to the world of "pumping iron", primarily because in the past I was a long distance runner.

When I realized that my running days were over I looked for a training program to use in the gymnasium to maintain my levels of fitness. I can honestly state that Turbulence Training by Craig Ballantyne met my requirements completely.

Craig Ballantyne is a Canadian who developed the concept of Turbulence Training whilst working on a post graduate degree. The biggest feature of this system is that you don't have to spend hours in the gym. It can be completed in about 45 minutes flat

The basis of Turbulence Training is the idea of working with pairs of super-sets. A super-set comprises of two sets of exercises that work different muscle groups, e.g. exercise 1 could be dumb dell split squats which work your glutes, thighs and calf muscles. The other exercise could be a dumb bell incline press which works your pectorals, triceps, biceps, trapezius and lattisimus dorsi.

The way Turbulence Training operates is to thoroughly warm up and then perform the exercises in super-set one (normally 8 repetitions per exercise) without any rest between the two. When completed rest for 30 seconds and then perform the exercises in super-set two without any rest, rest for 30 seconds and then do super-set three.

When completed rest for two minutes and then repeat two more times. The benefits for this type of exercise regime are many but the main ones include as well a lifting weights it also provides an excellent aerobic work out. The post exercise benefits include keeping your metabolic rate at a higher level for several hours. Normally this part of the work out can be done in 25 minutes.

The second part of the work out is Interval Training on any piece of aerobic exercise equipment. I tend to use either a stationary bike or a spinning bike. Having warmed up for about 5 minutes the interval part of the routine normally varies from 20 seconds to 40 seconds with a high level of resistance followed by either 1 minute 40 seconds or 1 minute 20 seconds of recovery. Normally you do 6 intervals followed a three minute warm down.

This routine is done on three alternate days in the week and on the in between days you just do the intervals.

The benefits of this type of work out include loss of fat and replacing it with muscle, smaller waist,a god level of aerobic fitness, increased self confidence. Most importantly, because it is not geared to "Pumping Iron" it is suitable for men and women.

In order to lose weight safely and without putting yourself at risk for such health hazards as dehydration, kidney failure, malnutrition, exhaustion, nervous dysfunction, tooth loss, dull hair, wrinkles, cellulite, sudden heart failure or stroke and lose the weight so that it stays off, you should lose no more than approximately two pounds a week!

Although that might not sound like a large amount of weight to lose it actually is! If you lose 2 pounds a week that means you can achieve a weight loss of ten pounds a month! If you only have twenty pounds to lose then your weight loss is not only quite rapid, but you have the extra guarantee that it will stay off because you have followed a sensible exercise plan that did not involve starving, exhausting or depriving yourself. If you are willing to drop your impatience and desire for immediate gratification and stick to an exercise plan and healthy eating habits, then a Mediterranean Diet is for you. Remember being slim is only good if you are able to enjoy it!

Do You Need to Lose Weight?

If you want to lose weight, you first need to assess whether you need to actually lose weight or are simply a fashion victim. Unfortunately this society is fascinated with fat - who has it and who doesn't. As we are persuaded by so many images in the media that persuade us to believe that you can never be too thin, many of us are bad judges of our actual body weight.

If you are under the age of eighteen and reading this book, the first thing you need to do is consult with your parent about your plans to lose weight. Have her make an appointment with a physician so that he can indicate to you whether or not you are a candidate for weight loss.

If you are obese and you know it, then you have to check with a physician first to see how your health is before you embark on any exercise program or plan. The same is also true if you have any kind of medical condition but especially a thyroid condition or heart condition. Some physicians may not recommend a weight loss program for those who are over 40 as due to genetics and hormonal changes some people naturally just round out or gain weight in a way that simply cannot be changed. If your doctor tells you your spreading hips are due to menopause or genetics, believe him! It is not clever to fool with Mother Nature.

The reason for this is that the devil is in the detail, and this fat loss routine will not work unless the small things are taken care of. This article offers three tips to get the most out of Warp Speed Fat Loss interval workouts and ensure you lose those 20 pounds of fat rather than a measly four or five.

Have you ever heard of spinning? Not a spinning class in the gym but rather spinning on a road bike. It was a theory that came out a few years ago that lowering your resistance and increasing the speed you pedal at would allow you to go further faster, it did this because you used up less energy. In warp speed fat loss you want to do exactly the opposite. Instead of jumping on a bike and pedaling as fast as you can, turn up the resistance first to a 7 or 8 out of 10 for your sprint. You will use up a lot more intramuscular energy by doing this and this is key to your fat burning.

Point two is common sense but a lot of people miss it. What will use up more energy? Pumping your bicep as hard as it can go or using your whole body? When doing the intervals try pick exercises that will use as much of your bodies large muscle groups as possible. The ultimate for this is sprinting. If you aren't injury prone and want great results this is the best option. If you don't want to sprint the next best is a stationary bike.

The third point is intensity, in your anaerobic sprints you need to take you muscles to a point where they are functioning without oxygen. This means going pretty much as hard as you can. Your muscles let you know that you have arrived at this point by burning and aching. You need to be in this state for as long as you can endure during your sprint interval. It's at this point that your body is using up energy stores inside the muscle itself. These energy stores take hours to replace and this is what causes your fat burning. Now the more muscle energy you use, the more energy it will take to put it back and the longer your fat loss will go on for.
