Diet Every Other Day Style Diets - An Easier Option For Fast Weight Loss?
By C M Schultz

The basis behind this style of diet is exactly what the title suggests - you diet every other day. What this means is you are able to eat without restrictions one day but must then eat lightly the following day.

Of course, in the real world you could never hope to go crazy every other day and still hope to shed those pounds. In real terms, you will not be without restrictions - but the restrictions do not seem so harsh, they are nothing more than sensible portion control guidelines.

The premise behind this style of diet is to hopefully bring a fast weight loss diet within reach of people that struggle to persevere with normally strict rapid weight loss regimes that insist on a constant low-calorie intake every day.

By allowing the dieter to have up-days (days where you can eat without major restriction) and down-days (low-calorie, fasting days) this form of dieting could appeal to anyone that simply cannot cope with feeling constantly starved every day.

A reputable alternate day dieting program should encourage you to eat sensibly on the high-calorie days, as previously mentioned. You should enjoy yourself but not go overboard. It is recommended that you eat a wide range of healthy foods until satisfied, but not overfull. That being said, the flexibility of this type of weight loss diet does allow you to enjoy your favorite foods if you wish...in moderation!

On a low-calorie day, fatigue is hopefully reduced by encouraging the consumption of potassium rich foods which help to alleviate feelings of weakness.

Most of the diets will advise that calorie intake should be limited to 300-400 calories on these days.

Many of the programs also recommended using protein shakes when beginning the diet until you become used to the restrictions. There is also a protein allowance for the down-days.

Every other day diets may be psychologically easier to stick to than their more strict counterparts in the fast or rapid weight loss regimes, but that depends on the individual. Some people may find it easier to manage the low-calorie restrictions of a low-calorie day when knowing that a high-calorie reward is one day away - that seems to be the attraction for some people.

The diet does encourages exercise and eating a sensible balanced diet of healthy foods.

The idea seems to be that the up-days allow you to consume adequate carbohydrates and supplement the reduced carbohydrate intake of the down-days.

One of the claims of the diet every other day style programs is that by eating normally every other day a dieter should be able to avoid the metabolism-reducing effects of the stricter low-calorie diets. But this would probably be more likely to be attributed to how an individual adapts to either of the diet types.
