As someone who has been on various weight control and dieting programs, I can tell you that it is a pretty frustrating business. You can reach a stage whereby nothing works. You are doing everything you can to follow the rules but your body simply refuses to budge. It rebels against you and all the carefully constructed principles that are meant to improve your chances of losing fat. It is at this point that you will be most vulnerable to despair and hopelessness. I believe that no situation is completely hopeless. Sometimes you will have the solution right up there in your hands but will lack the moral courage to take it.
When I reach such a stage I normally go back to my old motivational tools that have helped me to overcome so many things in life. The first thing is to visualize my body as I would like it to be. I have one of the those before and after photographs even if I know that I have not yet achieved the level of fat loss that will suit my body. However they can provide great inspiration for the dieter. One of the most motivational things that I find while trying to lose weight is the goal of getting to the ideal body size that I love. As I sweat on that treadmill I will be thinking about what things might be like if I eventually succeed in my endeavor.
Having a sense of humor and fun about you will help you to go through some of the more tedious phases of your diet and exercise program. If you are always serious about your weight loss, then you are likely to lose your temper when things go wrong. Believe me when I say that things will go wrong all the time unless you make an effort to laugh at yourself. If you have a philosophical attitude to minor failings, then you will be more likely to make it through your dieting program.
You need to be able to look after yourself when you are doing your fat loss program. We human beings need to feel loved and if no one is doing it for you then you can do it for yourself. For example if you have achieved something good in your dietary program then congratulate yourself in participating in an activity that you like. For me swimming is a favorite personal treat.
